One of the beliefs I held onto for far too long in the early years of business was that I was untouchable
I had the biggest client base
The most respected names
The best results
The highest income
The longest time in the game
It gave me confidence
It gave me drive
But it also created serious blind spots and cost me a bloody fortune!
Believing you’re the best at what you do is powerful
But over-belief breeds complacency
Clients started disappearing
Names I’d coached were now winning work I wanted
Competitors I didn’t rate were converting people I should have had
This forced a complete recalibration
I sat down and identified what my competitors were showing that I wasn’t
That one line of thinking led me to change how I market
How I sell
How I serve
The version of me that built the business was no longer the version that could take it further
I had built my reputation on tactical precision and fast results
But that wasn’t enough anymore
Clients weren’t just buying information
They were buying identity
They were buying values
They were buying a connection to someone who gets it
I wasn’t letting them see that side of me
So I made a shift
I let people in
The fun
The behind-the-scenes of my life
The banter with my wife
The joy with my daughter
The training
The home
The way I live and think and operate
None of it was manufactured
It was real
It was mine
It wasn’t done to impress
It was done to connect
Moral
I let people know I was a human not just a businessman
That one decision brought in a new type of client
Clients who wanted more than a fix
They wanted a feeling
They wanted to belong to something
They wanted to follow someone who was actually living what they teach
This is the kind of deep personal market research that never stops paying off
If you’re building a company that doesn’t carry your name start building a personal brand alongside it
People buy from people
They buy into the founder’s story
They buy into what you believe
They buy into the energy and the mission
In today’s world of copy-paste AI content and over-produced videos what stands out is authenticity
People want to see who’s behind the work
That’s true in financial services
It’s true in construction
It’s true in recruitment
It’s true in aesthetics
And it’s true in every industry that sells anything to anyone
Silence doesn’t preserve your relevance
It deletes you
What got you to where you are now will kill you moving forward
Your next level of growth is not necessarily a tactical move
It’s an identity shift
And with that you need to be comfortable being seen as the leader of your market
This is going to require you to share your message
This is going to require you to invest money in getting that message out there
And it’s going to require you to build daily habits to lock in your content and ideas
You need to build a system around it
The main reason most businesses suck at marketing is because they don’t do any of this well
They chase tactics but avoid identity
They post content but never say anything real
They rely on referrals but never build an audience
If you’ve built something great but feel like it’s no longer gaining ground
It’s time to shift
Stay sharp
Stay human
Stay seen

PS
On September 5th I’m running a one-day event in Belfast called Expansion
It’s for business owners who are ready to recalibrate their thinking
Sharpen their market presence
And build the systems that scale reputation profit and freedom
This will be my best work to date
